So after about a year of mostly procastinating but also some reworkings and test systems I have finally gotten a useable version of AbbeyQuest!

For those of you who do not know what AbbeyQuest is I will give a quick explanation: AbbeyQuest is an RPG System where users can make the outcomes of battles and of skill related tasks unpredictable but also add an extra level of customization to characters, who may become more able to complete certain tasks.

Now, how we do this is through a system I have talked about in the past: The d20. If you are not familiar with the d20 I suggest you try out a simpler form of this: The Time Waster.

Making a Character[]

Attributes[]

Now to start off we need to understand that there are seven basic attributes. These attributes gauge how well you perform at certain tasks. These are:

  • Strength(STR) - This applies to things like melee combat with large weapons like swords or axes or hammers. It also applies to things that require strength like say lifting a large object, climbing a mountain, or hand to hand combat.
  • Endurance(END) - This applies to how much health you have, how far and how fast you can run or swim, and how resiliant you are to harsh weather.
  • Dexterity(DEX) - This applies to how stealthy you are, how gracefully you move, how flexible and agile you are, and how good you are at using weapons which involve grace such as rapiers, whips, bolas, and some knives. It also works into how good you are at dodging.
  • Accuracy(ACR) - This applies to combat with thrown and ranged weapons such as bows, crossbows, guns(If they are allowed), blow darts, and throwing knives. It also applies to how far your character can see and what their eyesight is.
  • Intelligence(INT) - This applies to how much your character knows about things, what languages they may speak, and generally how smart they are.
  • Skill(SKL) - This applies to tasks like crafting things, sewing clothes, making potions and poultices, sailing, smithing, just anything that requires skill. However some things only work if your character has prior experience with the skill.
  • Charisma(CHA) - This applies to your characters speaking skill and their ability to argue, it also applies to their ability to play an instrument, sing, and act.

Character Sheet[]

The next step is of course making the actual character. This is done like you normally would, by filling out these categories:

Name:

Gender:

Species:

Appearance:

Personality:

History:

Easy to do, right? The next part is to determine your attribute bonuses. You will get 10 points which you can put into any of the 7 Attributes. These points will give you a bonus to rolls on these types of actions. So lets do an example, here we will ignore Appearance, Personality, and History as we are using the Taggerung himself, Deyna.

Name: Deyna

Gender: Male

Species: Otter

STR: 3 END: 2 DEX: 1 ACR: 4 INT: 0 SKL: 0 CHA: 0

Because Deyna was raised to be the ultimate warrior we obviously must put points into the combat skills, those being Strength, Endurance, Dexterity, and Accuracy. This means that he will get bonuses when he attacks with his sword, when he shoots a bow or throws his knife, when he heads into harsher climates like the mountains, and when he needs to run or swim.

Combat, Weapons, and Armor[]

The next part of this is of course the combat mechanics, which are slightly more complex. First of all you must determine how much health your character has. This can be done by taking your END value, multiplying it by 3, and adding 5. So for Deyna it would be this:

2x3+5=11 HP

So he has 11 Health Points. If he reaches 0 he will be knocked out, but not die. Your characters can only die if they are not revived or helped in any way after blacking out.

Weapons[]

The next step is creating a weapon. This is simple enough. First you decide your weapon type. For Deyna we will use the knife of Sawney Wrath. Being a knife any attacks made with it get a bonus from the DEX Attribute.

From here you decide how much damage it does. This is done by writing what kind of dice you use to determine damage. The die can be either a d4(The most commonly used), a d6, a d8, or a d12(Which is rare) these simply mean that the weapon can do between 1 and whatever number dice it is (4 for a d4, 6 for a d6, 8 for d8, etc.)

Then you write out what bonus damage it gets, and if there are multiple die used. Only do this if you are extra familiar with how to RPG, otherwise just ignore this.

Once this is all done you write out the weapon like this:

Weapon: Dagger(DEX) 1 d4 of damage.

Armor[]

Now we deal with what happens when you try to attack. Well this brings up Armor Class, or how hard it is to actually hit someone. For Deyna we will make an example to say that he is wearing some weak chestplate. We will then write what kind of bonus this armor gives to defense. Write it like this:

Armor: Small chest plate. (+3)

Now, AC is calculated with this formula:

10+(Armor Bonus)+(Dexterity Bonus) =AC

So for Deyna it would be this:

10+3+1=14 to AC

Now you write this on your character sheet like this:

Armor: Small Chest Plate (+3)

AC: 14

Combat[]

Now we take all of this and create a combat scene. Combat goes like this:

  1. The person who initiated combat makes a move, it can either be to move or to attack.
  2. If they attack they will roll a d20 and add in whatever bonus their weapon gives. So if Deyna rolled a 14 and he was using his knife he would add 1 and get a 15.
  3. This number is compared against the enemy's Armor Class(AC). Lets say the enemy's armor class in this case is 14, so Deyna hits. If the enemy's armor class were above 15 Deyna would have missed.
  4. Deyna now will roll a d4. Lets say it lands on a 2. This means Deyna just did 2 damage to his enemy. This means the enemy's Health, which in this example will be starting at 7 will now be a 5.
  5. The second person will then take their turn, either running away or attacking. They will follow the same procedure that Deyna just went through.

The Chracter Sheet in Full[]

Ok. So if we add up all these values we just got into a chracter sheet for Deyna is should look like this:

Name: Deyna

Gender: Male

Species: Otter

STR: 3 END: 2 DEX: 1 ACR: 4 INT: 0 SKL: 0 CHA: 0

Weapon: "Dagger of Sawney Wrath" (DEX) 1d4

Armor: Small Chest Plate (+3)

AC: 14

HP: 11

Appearance: See the books

Personality: See the books

History: See the books

Doing an RPG[]

Now that I have, hopefully, explained everything I hope that you all can do your own characters. I will be able to explain EVERYTHING you need to know. And last of all I must note that this is just a beta version and some things may change about it to better suit the game.

Here is the character sheet for those who want to fill one out themselves:

Name:

Gender:

Species:

STR: # END: # DEX: # ACR: # INT: # SKL: # CHA: #

Weapon:

Armor:

AC:

HP:

Appearance:

Personality:

History:

If you wish to try it out I will soon be posting a BATTLE ROYALE RPG featuring all your favorite chracters from Redwall who you will be able to play yourselves! In this we can test out the system and have a fun battle at the same time!
